On Becoming was made at the same time as Departure (work with Ed Cross), the banana tree foliage in the backdrop of Departure, triggered a memory of time spent at the butterfly enclosure at the Horniman Museum. Which is where the image for the drawing is sourced, I took several photographs at the enclosure and was fascinated by the form of the hanging fruit. The teardrop form of the fruit bears semblance to imagery of land cleansing ritual instruments I encountered whilst researching.
The line of enquiry in this work attempts to unveil a thought process, to trace a form back to its roots. A way of tracking the ancestral creative psyche. It asks “what inspired forms in the ritual sphere to take a particular shape?” and I feel like this process of “tracing tiggers” led back to an insightful revelation that the ritual instruments were likely to be inspired by forms found in nature.
The presence of the butterfly further amplifies the dynamism of transformation in the nature of becoming.
