This body of work comes out of a space that seeks clarity while gestures are true. The series carries three titles zvandakabara ndinoda ( what I gave birth to I love), ndombundira zvitsva (i embrace the new) and munzvimbo yaunofamba nekudzoka wega( the space you walk and return alone).
I am thinking and still questioning identity and what it contains for me. In my Shona culture, families are acknowledged by the family emblem which is an animal that is believed to have spiritual significance in families surrounding identity and roles in everyday issues. Not all animals are used as totems. Therefore children are of their fathers totem. I am married to a European meaning no totem for our children. I have often been asked what totem is my husband? Also experienced how some feel sorry concerning my children`s identity without totem.
The animal present in this body of work can only be assumed its no specific speci. I can not give a totem that there is sense of belonging , they are who they are and embraced.
As I was in the making of these works words like decision making, out of control, nature, new approaches to identity , relevance, father, mother , what matters? , where constantly rotating. An ongoing search and everyday encounters.
