FRIEZE SCULPTURE 2023: TEMITAYO OGUNBIYI: YOU WILL CARRY DREAMS, MEMORIES, AND NEW BEGINNINGS (48 DAYS)

19 September - 29 October 2023
Artist's performance: Tuesday 19 September, 1-3pm
Tiwani Contemporary is delighted to announce its participation in Frieze Sculpture 2023, with a new work by Lagos-based artist Temitayo Ogunbiyi. In her practice, Temitayo Ogunbiyi moves between drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, her work responding to, and forging dialogue between, global current events, anthropological histories, and botanical cultures. You will carry dreams, memories, and new beginnings (48 Days) (2023) includes casts of grinding stones, which have been used for generations in Nigeria to pulverise plants such as okra, beans, hot pepper, and tomato. Each grinding stone cast in this installation is made from melted water and gas head fittings, with the materials sourced in Nigeria. These casts are etched with words taken from titles of the artist’s previous works. The sculpture maps a 48-day walk from Lagos to London, and Ogunbiyi invites viewers to touch the work and charge the stones with their own intentions.

Curated by Fatoş Üstek, Frieze Sculpture 2023 addresses how the medium of sculpture can be both monumental and ephemeral, qualities manifested explicitly in You will carry dreams, memories, and new beginnings (48 days).

During the opening performance of You will carry dreams, memories, and new beginnings (48 days), visitors will be escorted to the performance site, walking alongside the artist. Upon arrival at the performance location, each participant will be invited to stand in a circle with Ogunbiyi. The artist will invite the participants to take three deep breaths and then hand each participant a stone. Each participant will then be encouraged to recite a prayer, wish or incantation, silently or aloud, and then pass the stone to the right and leave the circle, allowing new participants to join. A line of the threaded stones will remain on view for the duration of Frieze Sculpture.

The performance will take place on Tuesday, 19 September from 1-3 pm in the English Gardens, The Regent’s Park, at the south end of The Broadwalk, which connects Frieze London and Frieze Masters.

If you wish to participate, please email studio@temitayo.com. All participants will be notified of the location for the performance by 5PM BST on Friday,15th September, 2023.

Sculptural works by Temitayo Ogunbiyi will also be presented by Tiwani Contemporary at Frieze London 2023. Visit Main Section booth G07.
